Shubman Gill vs Ishan Kishan - comparing their stats after 32 T20Is ahead of 2026 T20 World Cup

Vice-captain Shubman Gill was ignored as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The selectors re-appointed all-rounder Axar Patel as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the ICC event.

Gill’s ouster came as a surprise since the team management had backed him since the 2025 Asia Cup. In this period, the right-handed batter managed 291 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 137.26 without a single half-century. Notably, the 26-year-old returned with scores of 4 (2), 0 (1), and a run-a-ball 28 before sustaining a right-foot injury during the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa that India won 3-1.

On the other hand, Ishan Kishan made his comeback after being ignored after his last T20I in November 2023. The wicketkeeper-batter has been rewarded for his exploits with the bat in the 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The southpaw amassed 517 runs in 10 innings at a stunning strike rate of 197.32, including two tons and as many half-centuries.

Leading from the front, Kishan slammed 101 off 49 balls as Jharkhand beat Haryana in the final to lift their maiden SMAT title. He will now serve as a backup wicketkeeper for Sanju Samson and also as a backup opener for the 2026 T20 World Cup and T20I series against New Zealand.

Most runs

Ishan Kishan made a promising debut for the Men in Blue in 2021. The left-handed batter smashed 56 against England. In T20Is, he has amassed 796 runs in 32 innings.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill failed to impress on his debut against Sri Lanka in 2023, perishing for only seven runs. In his first 32 T20Is, he scored 808 runs.

Averages and strike rates

Ishan Kishan has played at an average of 25.67 in his T20I career. His strike rate is 124.37.

On the contrary, Shubman Gill had a slightly better average and strike rate of 28.85 and 139.31, respectively, after playing 32 T20Is.

Most 50s

Ishan Kishan has slammed six half-centuries in his T20I career. The 27-year-old slammed his career-best against Sri Lanka in 2022, scoring 89 runs off 56 balls.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill hit one century and three fifties in his first 32 T20Is. His career-best knock came against New Zealand in 2023, where he slammed an unbeaten 126 off 63 deliveries.

Ishan Kishan won 21 of his 32 T20Is with Team India. In these games, he amassed 614 runs at an average of 30.70 and a strike rate of 125.56, comprising five half-centuries.

Interestingly, Shubman Gill also won 21 out of his first 32 T20Is with the Men in Blue. The right-handed batter amassed 661 runs in 21 innings at an average of 36.72 and a tremendous strike rate of 149.20, comprising one ton and three fifties.

Overall, Gill has amassed 869 runs in 36 T20Is at an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59, including one ton and three half-centuries.

Meanwhile, in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill has amassed 3,866 runs in 118 matches (115 innings), hitting four tons and 26 fifties. On the contrary, Kishan has 2,998 runs in 119 games (112 innings), comprising one century and 17 fifties.
