Shocking Patriots-Packers trade idea would bring athletic WR to New England

The New England Patriots have had a busy offseason. They have made it a point to add weapons and protection for Drake Maye. However, they could still make a move to better prepare for the future.

The Patriots signed Stefon Diggs, drafted Kyle Williams and drafted TreVeyon Henderson. That is three new weapons for Maye, two of which could be long-term options for the team. Diggs signed a three-year deal with the Patriots, but is seemingly closer to the end of his career than the start. The Patriots are hoping Williams and Henderson can grow and become part of a core with Maye.

However, FanSided's Sara Marshall suggested the Patriots could add another younger receiver to grow with Maye. Marshall suggested that Christian Watson of the Green Bay Packers could be a trade target for the Patriots. The Packers drafted Matthew Golden in the first round of this year's NFL Draft and Watson is entering a contract year.

"Watson is entering the final year of his rookie contract this year and could easily be traded to another team before the Packers decide if an extension is worth it," wrote Marshall. "They may have already made up their minds based on drafting Matthew Golden in the first round of last month's draft, which could be a good sign for New England. The 6-foot-4 receiver could easily round out the Patriots' receiving corps in 2025 and earn an extension that allows him to stay and grow with Maye over the next few years."

Watson could miss a chunk of the season as he recovers from an ACL tear. However, by the time he returns, the Packers could have established a strong receiving corps of Jayden Reed, Golden, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks. If there is no spot for Watson, then the team would likely let him walk as a free agent.

However, his injury makes him a cheap trade target for the Patriots. Watson has elite speed and is a great downfield threat. He is also a willing blocker. He has struggled with injuries, but played in 15 games last season. Despite the Packers being a run-first offense while Jordan Love was out, Watson still managed to put up solid numbers. He had 620 receiving yards, a career high.

The Patriots could trade for Watson now and see what they can get out of him in a short time when he returns. If he looks promising, they could bring him back in free agency or extend him.
