Mac Jones went 5-3 as a starter when Brock Purdy missed time with a toe injury.

Jones is locked in through 2026 at $3.25 million annually. The Athletic's Jeff Howe wrote that the 49ers could either keep him as insurance or field offers if contenders call the team.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan wanted Jones in the 2021 draft and watched him run the offense successfully this fall. Purdy has dealt with injuries in each of his four NFL seasons, which makes the backup spot more critical than usual.

The 49ers and the Chicago Bears (11-4) have secured their playoff berths. Sunday's game matters for seeding.

San Francisco can sort Jones' long-term status once January football wraps up. He has recorded 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns in 11 games this season.
