Sean McVay details what he looks for in assistant coaches

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is part of the Mike Shanahan coaching tree, but he is also developing a prominent limb of his own.

The Super Bowl winning coach has many coaches that have worked under him go on to be head coaches of their own, including Matt Lafleur, Zac Taylor, Kevin O’Connell, Raheem Morris and Liam Coen.

That trend is likely to continue as multiple assistants on the current Rams staff are up for other opportunities in the league, including defensive coordinator Chris Shula, offensive coordinator Mike Lafleur and pass game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase.

The Rams finished the season with the No. 1 offense and a top 10 defense. They have now reached the NFC championship where they will face the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday. It makes sense that coaches are getting looks.

“Guys are getting better opportunities that we can’t offer here and that’s a great thing for them,” McVay told reporters on Friday.

If the three assistant coaches leave for a better opportunities, McVay will need to make new hires this offseason. He was asked what he looks for in a perfect coach.

“I think the first question is, what’s the fit?,” he said. “And we’ve gotten a lot of reps at this too now. It starts with character. You better be a high character individual and I don’t really care what kind of coach you are, but I don’t think you’re a good coach if you don’t have high character. And then you better have capacity for the game. You better be a great communicator where you can connect with your coaches and with your teammates and with your players most importantly. Because our job is to elevate.”
