Sean McDermott's plans after Bills firing revealed by NFL insider

1 hour ago 3

Not everyone in Buffalo Bills land was happy that Sean McDermott was fired.

But that was the decision that Bills owner Terry Pegula made, alongside the choice to promote Brandon Beane to president of football operations.

It sent an odd message, and Bills Mafia will reserve some judgment until a new head coach is hired.

As far as McDermott is concerned, though, it seemed initially he'd be a prime candidate for one of the other head coaching gigs that was open.

It sounds instead like he might not go after any of them.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported this on Sunday:

“Remains unclear what Sean McDermott will firmly decide to do, but to my knowledge, has not engaged on any of these openings. But I believe it is likely he ends up taking a year off.”

McDermott was at the helm for the entirety of the Bills' turnaround, leading them to the end of their long playoff drought and turning them into one of the NFL's consistently best teams.

They couldn't get over the hump with McDermott and get to the Super Bowl, and that infamous "13 seconds" loss to the Kansas City Chiefs will never be forgotten in Buffalo.

The Bills made a change in the hopes that they can find someone who will maximize superstar quarterback Josh Allen's chances of winning a Super Bowl.

That's not to say McDermott is a bad coach, though. Clearly, he seems to be a pretty good one.

He may not go after a job now, but when he puts his name back on the market, he'll be desirable for sure.
