Seahawks' Sam Darnold can make journeyman NFL history with Super Bowl 60 win

The Seattle Seahawks are playing in Super Bowl 60 against the New England Patriots. Aside from revenge from the 2015 Super Bowl, the Seahawks are looking to secure their second title in franchise history.

There's plenty of history at stake in this game for the Seahawks, with Mike Macdonald, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and plenty of others on the cusp of impressive history. But none have a chance to do something as impressive as Sam Darnold.

The journeyman quarterback, on his fifth different team, has a chance to make NFL history. As Dante Kolpowitz-Fleming of NFL.com shares, Darnold only needs to win to become the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl while being on his fifth team.

Seahawks' Sam Darnold can make journeyman NFL history

"With a win in Super Bowl 60, Sam Darnold will have a strong argument for having pulled off the greatest career turnaround in NFL history," Kolpowitz-Fleming writes. "... A victory on Sunday would cement Darnold as the first starting QB to win a game while on his fifth team."

Darnold doesn't need to do anything during the game to set this record. As long as he's the starter and the Seahawks win, the veteran quarterback will make some wild NFL history.

The Seahawks starting quarterback has been in the NFL since 2018, where he began his career with the New York Jets. He left after three seasons, then joined the Carolina Panthers for two years.

But in Carolina, he made just 17 starts and never could put together a good enough stretch to cement his status as their starter. He then took a trip out West to join the San Francisco 49ers, where he turned his career around.

While he only played in one game, the Minnesota Vikings saw enough to take a chance on him, and in 2024, he won 14 games for the Vikings. But their season ended on two back-to-back brutal losses, and the Vikings let Darnold walk.

He signed with the Seahawks, his fifth NFL team in eight years, and won 14 games and is now playing in the Super Bowl.

No other quarterback in NFL history has ever started a Super Bowl while on their fifth team and won. Darnold can do so Sunday, and what makes this so impressive is that it'd occur in just his eighth season.
