The Seattle Seahawks entered their Week 9 Sunday Night Football matchup against the Washington Commanders with a chance to further cement their status as a Super Bowl contender.
Not only did the Seahawks crush the Commanders, 38-14, but the Sam Darnold connection with Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued to produce elite numbers. On 12 targets, Smith-Njigba caught eight passes for 129 yards.
After such a dominant performance, as Dante Koplowitz-Fleming of NFL.com mentions, the Seahawks' wide receiver is on pace to set a new single-season NFL receiving yards record.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on pace to set the NFL receiving yards record
"The 23-year-old wideout now leads the NFL with 948 receiving yards in eight games played (putting him on pace for the first-ever 2,000-yard season receiving)." Koplowitz-Fleming writes.
Through eight weeks, the Seahawks receiver is not only leading the league in receiving yards, but he's on pace to not only set an NFL record, but also become the first player to reach 2,000 receiving yards in a single season.
To add to this incredible feat, his 948 receiving yards through eight weeks broke the NFL record for most yards by a player 25 years old and under. Isaac Bruce held the record previously at 938 yards.

Bruce finished the year with 1,781 yards and 13 touchdowns on 119 receptions. Smith-Njigba has 58 receptions for 948 yards and four touchdowns so far this season. While he's on track to set the yardage record, he's a ways away from the touchdown or reception record.
His efficiency has been incredible, and one of the main reasons why the Seattle Seahawks have been such a great passing offense this season.
The 23-year-old is in the middle of a breakout season, and while he'd need to finish out the year strong to set the NFL record, he's on pace to do so. This was the fourth straight game with at least 123 receiving yards, and his fifth such game this season.
While setting NFL history won't be easy, Smith-Njigba's connection with Darnold has been incredible, and there are no signs of it slowing down anytime soon.
