Saquon Barkley’s mother, Tonya Johnson, picked between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, the two teams that shaped the running back's career.
She was asked on Friday which city has crazier fans.
“I hate to say it, but I am going to say Philly, hands down,” Tonya said, via "Studio 2 Extra." “We were on the other side. Now, we on this side. But we were on the receiving side and we came out here for games when the Giants would play the Eagles and I’m like, 'Oh my gosh.'”•

Johnson also shared a wild memory from those rivalry days.

“We were in a stadium one time and he (Saquon's father, Alibay Barkley) had just a New York hat on and some guy walked past him and slapped the hat right off his head," Johnson said. "And I’m like, 'No, no, no, no.' Somebody else stepped in and was like, 'You know, don’t do that.' But now we on this side. So, I like it, where we at now.”Her comments came 19 months after Barkley left the Giants and signed with the Eagles on March 11, 2024 (according to Spotrac). It is a three-year $37.75 million deal with bonuses.
Since the Giants did not franchise tag him, he signed with Philly as a free agent, and the decision paid off. Barkley won his Super Bowl ring when the Philadelphia beat Kansas 40-22 in New Orleans on Feb. 9.
Johnson expressed her happiness about it.
“That was something that Saquon wanted to get off his bucket list,” Johnson said. “I was so happy for him because he got something done that talked about as a kid. All he ever talked about was, ‘I want a Super Bowl ring. I want a Super Bowl ring.’”Barkley is in his eighth NFL season and second with the Eagles. The team is leading the NFC East with a 6-2 record, while New York is fourth (2-6).
Saquon Barkley’s mother Tonya spotted hints of his athletic power while Eagles RB was young
When Saquon Barkley joined the "Takeoff with John Clark" podcast on Oct. 14, he brought his mom, Tonya Johnson.
She looked back on the early signs that showed Saquon was special.
“To be honest with you I wasn't a football person,” Johnson said. “I would go to all his Little League games and take him to practice when my husband couldn't take him, but it was really when he got into high school and that’s when his father said, come see this kid. You really got to see what's going on. Yeah, then I was like, 'OK.'”She also remembered how confident Barkley was as a teen.
“When he sat on that couch and said, ‘I'm going to an NFL and I'm going to buy you a house one day,’ the person just looked at him and said, 'OK, yeah, sure,'" Johnson said. "And once he was in Penn State, then it was like, 'OK, wow.'”Barkley and his family did not have it easy. They moved from the Bronx to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, searching for a better life. Johnson worked hard, sometimes walking to work and leaning on kind neighbors, while teaching her kids to stay strong.
