After a heartbreaking loss in the Super Bowl two seasons ago, the 49ers had a frustrating year in 2024 and missed the playoffs for only the second time in the past six years.

While Brock Purdy established himself as the team's franchise quarterback, San Francisco took a major step back with just six wins. That led to the team making so changes in the offseason, including trading Deebo Samuel and bringing back Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator.

49ers strength of schedule

The 49ers' struggles in 2024 were in large part due to a tough schedule, as they played eight games against playoff teams last year. In those games, San Francisco went 1-7, which was essentially the end of the 49ers' quest for the playoffs

For the 2025 season, the 49ers have the benefit of the easiest schedule in the NFL based on the league's strength of schedule numbers. San Francisco's opponents combined for a .415 winning percentage last season, the lowest number of all teams' opponents this year.

Toughest tests: Besides being in a tough division, the 49ers get two non-conference games against playoff teams from a year ago. San Francisco will have to travel to play both the Buccaneers and Texans on the road in battles against two teams with championship aspirations.

Biggest breaks: San Francisco catches a break in its schedule with games against the Titans, Browns, and Giants, who were the three worst teams in the NFL last year. Those squads combined for a 9-42 record in 2024 and could once again be easy targets this season.
