Saints’ offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is part of the evaluation process at this year’s Senior Bowl, a group that included a very familiar face — his son, former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
“Obviously, there’s a difference between being a dad and being an NFL offensive coordinator,” Doug Nussmeier told WGNO-TV in New Orleans. “You have to draw lines on certain things. It’s cool to be here and be part of the experience.”
Because Doug is not among the Saints coaches holding prominent roles on the American team’s staff, he is not required to complete a formal scouting report on his son during practices or the game on Saturday.

“I’ll leave that to his coaches, but we are working to evaluate the whole roster. Here as a dad to see Garrett but also working as a coach with the Saints to look at the offensive players,” Doug Nussmeier said.
Garrett is looking to prove himself in Mobile as he works his way back from an abdominal injury he suffered this past season at LSU.
Doug’s presence and support during the Senior Bowl process is another example of the role he has played throughout Garrett’s football journey.

“I’m extremely blessed to have him in my life,” Garrett told the New Orleans TV station. “To have an upper hand in the sense of knowing what to expect. Being around guys he’s coached in the last six or seven years like Dak (Prescott), Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and now Tyler in his first year. Just being able to study those guys from afar and see how they interact has helped me a lot.”
“We’re blessed and I am blessed to be able to do that and feel fortunate that he has an opportunity to be here and compete with the best,” Doug said.
Nussmeier is projected to be drafted in the middle rounds with three months to go until the draft. Maybe the Saints draft him? They certainly believe in their starter, Tyler Shough, who had a phenomenal rookie season.
