Following the conclusion of the NFL trade deadline, the New Orleans Saints made multiple selling moves on Tuesday.
To begin the day, the Saints agreed to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks. New Orleans agreed to trade wide receiver Rasheed Shaheed to the Seahawks in exchange for a fourth-round and fifth-round pick in next year's draft.
The Saints weren't done after that, and just before the deadline closed at 4 p.m. EST, a deal was made between them and the Los Angeles Chargers.
Saints trade OL Trevor Penning to Chargers for draft compensation
According to multiple reports, the Saints agreed to deal offensive lineman Trevor Penning to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
The Chargers were desperate for offensive line help after it was announced that left tackle Joe Alt would miss the rest of the 2025 season with an ankle injury. He joined fellow offensive lineman Rashawn Slater as a starting Chargers lineman who won't return to action this season.
Penning, 26, is a former first-round pick (No. 19 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Northern Iowa.
The young lineman has made starts in multiple positions throughout his career. He's been the Saints' left guard over the last six games, but appeared at right tackle for them in 2024.
According to Pro Football Focus, Penning has allowed three sacks in 358 offensive snaps played this season.
Penning will look to protect Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who is third in the league, behind the Tennessee Titans' Cam Ward (38) and the New England Patriots' Drake Maye (34), in total sacks taken with 28.
