Former India captain Sachin Tendulkar is popularly known as the ‘God of Cricket’ for his services to the sport. Despite retiring in 2012, the legendary batter remains the leading run-getter in international cricket with 34,357 runs in 664 matches, including 100 tons and 164 half-centuries across all three formats. No other player has scored 30,000 or more runs.
The Mumbai-born cricketer has played many memorable knocks in his career spanning 24 years. However, the one that stood out the most for his former teammate, Pravin Amre, was his third Test century, which came at WACA in Perth in 1992.
The 57-year-old said the 18-year-old slammed 114 against the Aussies on a pitch with massive cracks on it against a quality bowling attack. The opposition bowlers included Craig McDermott, Merv Hughes, and Paul Reiffel on a bounce-friendly track.
Amre, who played 11 Tests and 37 ODIs for Team India, said on ‘The Great India Cricket Show’ on Doordarshan (via ANI):
“Out of all his hundreds, the one in Perth when he was just 18 years of age, stands out. I was the 12th man that day, his roommate, and saw it all from ground zero.” “The pitch had cracks so big that Sachin placed his bat in one and it stood upright. Against world-class bowlers, on a surface where the ball could go anywhere, he showed skill, class, and mindset beyond his years. That 1992 Perth hundred? One of the finest I have ever witnessed,” he added.Notably, Tendulkar scored 114 runs off 161 balls, comprising six tons in the second innings of the fifth Test.

Sachin Tendulkar emerged as India’s leading run-scorer during the 1991/92 Test series in Australia. The right-handed batter amassed 368 runs in five Tests (nine innings) at an average of 46, including two centuries. Apart from 114, he slammed an unbeaten 148 in the third Test of the five-match series in Sydney. Despite his heroics, India lost the series 0-4 with the third Test ending in a draw.
During his illustrious career, Tendulkar amassed 1,809 runs in 20 Tests (38 innings) Down Under at an average of 53.20, including six tons and seven half-centuries. His career-best in Australia came in January 2004, when he scored an unbeaten 241 in Sydney, which ended in a draw.
