Rory McIlroy family tree: Meet wife Erica, daughter Poppy, parents, more to know about golf star's Northern Ireland roots

Rory McIlroy has millions of fans across the United States, Northern Ireland and the world, but a few close confidants have stayed by his side through the ups and downs of his career.

Aside from his many friends in the game of golf, McIlroy has leaned heavily on his parents and the rest of his immediate family as he chased a return to glory during his long majors drought.

Here's a look at the family behind McIlroy, including his wife and parents.

Rory McIlroy wife: Erica Stoll

McIlroy has been married to Erica Stoll since early 2017. The two welcomed a daughter in 2020. 

Stoll, a former PGA of America office manager who met McIlroy through her job, ran into issues with the star golfer in 2024. After McIlroy filed for divorce in early 2024, the two reconnected in the middle of the year and announced they would remain married. Stoll was recently seen with McIlroy at the Par 3 Contest ahead of the Masters.

Rory McIlroy daughter: Poppy McIlroy

McIlroy's only daughter, Poppy, was born on Aug. 31, 2020, and has been by her father's side for many of his biggest moments in recent years.

After Poppy's birth, McIlroy said there was "nothing like it in the world" when asked about how fatherhood felt. "It's probably the best part of being a human being, and I'm glad that I got to experience it," he told Golfweek.

Rory McIlroy father: Gerry McIlroy

McIlroy has a close relationship with his father, Gerry, who once cleaned bathrooms and worked as a bartender among his multiple jobs to help support his son. One of Gerry's jobs was at Holywood Golf Club, where McIlroy worked toward a professional golf career.

Gerry is described as a source of positivity for the often emotional McIlroy, even after working long hours to make his son's dream possible. "We didn't take a family holiday for over a decade," McIlroy said of his parents in 2017.

Rory McIlroy mother: Rosie McIlroy

McIlroy's mother, Rosie, also has a close relationship with her son, but she is described as the tougher of the two. She held down a factory job and made sure her son didn't stray from the path that would help him achieve his golf dreams. 

Rosie married Gerry in 1988, and the two remain the biggest public and private supporters of their son, even as he has gathered a massive fan base.

Where is Rory McIlroy from?

McIlroy was born and raised in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. While he is now a global superstar, McIlroy can still find his most ardent supporters back home in Northern Ireland as he continues to add onto his remarkable legacy.
