Rookie safety Jalon Kilgore versatility on display at Bills camp

The Buffalo Bills may have found one of the steals of the 2026 NFL Draft when they selected Jalon Kilgore in the fifth round with the 167th overall pick. The former University of South Carolina standout brings versatility, athleticism and physicality to Buffalo’s secondary as he begins his NFL career wearing No. 29.

Kilgore enters the league with an impressive college résumé after starting 33 games for the Gamecocks. During his time at South Carolina, he totaled 178 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, 21 passes defended, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. His production and leadership helped him earn second-team All-SEC honors in 2025 after being named a team captain.

Before that breakout campaign, Kilgore already established himself as one of the SEC’s rising defensive backs by earning Freshman All-America and Freshman All-SEC honors in 2023.

What stands out most about Kilgore is his versatility. At 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, he possesses ideal size for a modern NFL safety while also bringing elite athletic traits. At the NFL Combine, Kilgore ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 37-inch vertical jump, showcasing the explosiveness that caught Buffalo’s attention.

 Kilgore could become key piece in Buffalo’s secondary

Kilgore lined up at multiple positions throughout his college career, giving new Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard several options in the secondary. He played both safety spots, frequently operated in the nickel and proved capable of defending tight ends and supporting against the run as a slot defender.

That flexibility could make Kilgore a valuable chess piece in Buffalo’s defense. While he projects primarily as a box safety, his ability to slide into the slot creates matchup advantages against versatile offenses. More importantly, Kilgore consistently showed strong instincts and a knack for finding the football.

The Bills also moved quickly to secure their rookie defender financially. Kilgore signed a four-year, $4.84 million rookie contract that includes a $463,316 signing bonus and the same amount guaranteed.

For Buffalo, Kilgore represents more than just depth in the secondary. He brings toughness, athleticism and positional versatility that could allow him to contribute sooner than expected in a defense looking for playmakers.
