Romy Gonzalez’s return could decide whether the Red Sox buy or sell at deadline

Right now, the Boston Red Sox are in a bit of a tough situation; they are four games out of the AL Wild Card, which means they need to make a decision on the direction of their franchise this season.

They could either be sellers at the deadline, getting a bunch of assets to build around their next era in Roman Anthony, or they could be buyers, and move forward with the talented yet streaky core they have.

If they go with the latter, they need a right-handed bat to complement their offense. While they might not be ready to pay the price at the deadline, they do have one coming back from injury and a career-best season: Romy Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has been with the Red Sox since 2024, where he has been a useful utility man for Boston. In 2024, he was just that: he slashed .266/.306/.417/.723 with 10 doubles, six home runs and 29 RBI in 89 games.

However, in 2025, something clicked for Gonzalez. He found himself with more responsibility after the Red Sox traded Rafael Devers, and his hitting stats showed that. He slashed .305/.343/.483/.826 with 23 doubles, nine home runs, and 53 RBI in 96 games.

So far this season, Gonzalez has been on the IL recovering from a shoulder injury. However, just today, it was noted that he is starting his rehab assignment in the minors soon, and once that happens, it would be a few weeks before he returns.

That would put him back by July, a little over a month before the trade deadline. If he can bring back the bat he had last year, it would be an immense help to Boston.

If Gonzalez can play at the level he was last year, he would be an amazing bat for the Red Sox, especially at home, where they have had minimal success this season.

If he can put together a good month before the deadline and get the Sox full back into the Wild Card race, being buyers at the deadline becomes a must.

Hopefully, Gonzalez starts his rehab ASAP, and makes it back to Boston in time.
