Rick Pitino vs. Bill Self record: Inside the head-to-head matchups, rings and more about St. John's, Kansas coaches

1 hour ago 3

Rick Pitino and Bill Self are two of the longest tenured coaches in college basketball. Pitino got his start as an assistant at Hawaii in 1974, while Self began as an assistant at Kansas in 1985.

Pitino has gone on to be the head coach for five different schools and two NBA teams. He has been the head coach for Providence (1985-1987), Kentucky (1989-1997), Louisville (2001-2017), Iona (2020-2023) and St. John's (2023 to present), with stops with the New York Knicks (1987-1989) and Boston Celtics (1997-2001) along the way.

Self's first head coaching gig came in 1993 when he joined Oral Roberts. After coaching there until 1997, he moved on to Tulsa (1997-2000), Illinois (2000-2003), and Kansas (2003 to present), having never been wooed to coach in the NBA.

Probably the most surprising thing about the two coaching resumes of Pitino and Self, given how extensive they are, is how infrequently the two have coached against each other. Ahead of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, Pitino and Self have coached against each other just one time.

Here is more on the career comparison between Pitino and Self, including their head-to-head record.
