With the Minnesota Timberwolves' Game 5 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, they will be moving on to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. Headlined by their energetic and confident star Anthony Edwards, the T-Wolves are looking to make a deep playoff run and solidify Edwards as the face of the league.
However, there are some people out there who don’t believe Edwards should be considered for that honor. Retired NBA guard-turned-analyst Jay Williams is one of them, as he believes Edwards is overshadowing the true contender for face of the NBA, Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum.
“All I’m gonna say is, how many times has Jayson Tatum been in the Eastern Conference Finals? How many times has Jayson Tatum been in the NBA Finals? Brother could win multiple championships, and we just gonna give [face of the NBA] to Ant [Edwards]? Because he has a personality?” Williams questioned.
Williams does have a point. Edwards has been in the league for five years now, and all he’s done is been an All-Star twice, second team All-NBA once, and the furthest he’s made in the playoffs is the second round.
Tatum on the other hand had been insane, yet he doesn’t receive a spotlight. He’s been in the league for only three more years, yet has four more All-Stars, three more All-NBA’s, three of which are first team, an Eastern Conference Finals MVP, an All-Star MVP, and he’s an NBA champion.
Can Edwards still become face of the NBA in spite of this? Definitely. All these critics want though is for Tatum to get his flowers, and if he does, maybe a new rivalry for a new era can begin.
