Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ loss in a win-or-go-home Game 5 contest against the Minnesota Timberwolves, there were plenty of intriguing soundbites during the various interviews.

From Jaxson Hayes discussing his playoff benching to LeBron James providing the media with a much-needed update on his NBA status moving forward, it was essential to tune into the postgame action.

However, regarding the most compelling postgame quote, there’s no question that first-year head coach JJ Redick takes the cake.

After the Lakers' devastating defeat, Redick appeared to take a shot at the franchise’s superstar guard, Luka Doncic.

"I'll start with the offseason and the work that's required in an offseason to be in championship shape," Redick told reporters after Los Angeles’ crushing defeat.

“And we have a ways to go as a roster. And certainly, there are individuals that were in phenomenal shape. There's certainly other ones that could have been in better shape. That's where my mind goes immediately is we have to get in championship shape."

When Doncic first entered the league in 2018, he was a slender 6-foot-6 rookie who could get up and down the floor with urgency and maintain a consistent motor.

Now that the 26-year-old stud has ballooned to 230 points and gets winded quicker, legitimate concerns about his physical well-being make it logical to assume Redick was calling him out to the media.

Is Doncic still capable of using his calculated offensive approach to create advantages during drives, hitting cutters in stride at different passing angles, and exposing below-average perimeter defenders nightly?

Of course, considering the former No. 3 overall pick averaged 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in five playoff contests this year.

Still, Doncic’s commitment to following James’ lead and working on his body during the offseason would help him elevate the Lakers to new heights in 2025-26.

It also wouldn’t hurt for the five-time All-Star to prioritize improving his defensive footwork and offering more resistance on that end of the floor.

Redick’s comments should motivate Doncic to make significant changes this summer.
