In this era of the NFL, it's not uncommon for veteran running backs to linger in free agency. They aren't viewed as big-money signings. They're viewed as eventual depth chart additions.
Often, the RBs want to wait to see where the best opportunity for them might be, and that has created a fascinating list of remaining free agent backs this offseason that includes Najee Harris, Nick Chubb, Brian Robinson, Joe Mixon and Kareem Hunt.
All have had legitimate success as starting running backs in the NFL.
Now, they all just seek another opportunity.
MORE: Why the Kansas City Chiefs traded for Justin Fields
Harris is coming off a torn Achilles that ruined his lone season with the Chargers. He'll have to demonstrate to teams that he's healthy again.
Chubb had a solid season with the Houston Texans but is getting up there in years.
Robinson was the 49ers' backup after a preseason trade took him away from the Commanders, and now he'd probably like to have a bigger role if possible.
Mixon had a mysterious absence all year and will be hard for teams to sign until they really understand his full picture.
Hunt may be slowing down, but he still showed solid short-yardage ability with the Chiefs and will likely get a contract somewhere eventually.
There have also been veterans in recent years who show they still have something left in the tank and turn out to be a major addition. That is to say, don't count these guys out entirely. At least one of them will probably be a key pickup for the 2026 NFL season.
At this point, though, they've probably got to be patient. Clearly, no one is in a rush to sign an aging running back.
