The Boston Red Sox have yet to make significant spending this offseason, and hopefully, that will change soon. They need to make a big splash, as they are one superstar away from a top-tier team.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Sox should take their money and spend it on re-signing Alex Bregman. If they can’t land him, they should immediately pivot to two-time All-Star Bo Bichette.
“The Boston Red Sox will have no excuses if they fail to re-sign free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman…Bregman, who turns 32 in March, is still the best fit for the Red Sox. He is proven in Boston. And he is one of the game’s most respected leaders, that rare player who makes his teammates better…And if the Red Sox lose him? They could turn around and sign Bichette, the younger player who Britton projects to receive eight years, $212 million. And if they played Bichette at second, perhaps they would be comfortable installing Mayer at third,” Rosenthal wrote.
This past season, Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462/.821 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs, and 62 RBI in 114 games. As for Bichette, he slashed .311/.357/.483/.840 with 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI in 139 games.
Rosenthal concluded his article hammering home that the Sox have the money and need to spend it on Bregman or Bichette.
“The answer for the Red Sox is Bregman. If not him, Bichette. And the way Breslow has operated this offseason, making one economically shrewd move after another, the Sox are in perfect position to strike. They have the money. Time to spend it,” Rosenthal ended.
He’s totally right. Getting either of these guys will definitely put them in playoff contention, and maybe even a shot at the World Series. Hopefully they realize that, and get to work.
