The Boston Red Sox have had a horrendous start to the 2026 season, going 1-5 in their first six games. With basically a brand new roster, there’s only a few constants from their last World Series win in 2018; one of them being manager Alex Cora.
Since the Sox’s 108-54 season in 2018, Cora has an overall record of 503-475, just 28 games above .500. With only two playoff appearances in those years, FanSided’s Jake Elman urges Boston to start looking at new skippers, with one of them being a current coach and former legend, Jason Varitek.
“Upon further reflection, this is a perfect match. Varitek played his entire 15-year career with the Red Sox, serving as their captain from 2005 through his retirement after the 2011 season. A three-time All-Star, Varitek was the soul of the 2004 and 2007 championship teams and never backed down from a challenge, as Alex Rodriguez learned firsthand. Varitek has also served on Cora’s staff for the last six seasons, so he’s gotten plenty of MLB coaching experience. Perhaps most importantly, Varitek and Breslow were teammates in 2006, so if the latter thinks highly of him, that could bode well for Varitek’s chances of getting an interview,” Elman wrote.
Varitek does have a lot going for him. He’s a former Sox player, and like their eternal rivals, the New York Yankees, Boston has started a trend of putting former players in managerial positions.
Additionally, the players love him, which is an important factor. As seen with the Rafael Devers drama, and most recently the Carlos Narvaez drama, Cora’s rapport with the players, although still good, is starting to crack.
If the Sox still don’t have their stuff together by the time May rolls around, this is something they really need to consider. They have the talent to be winners; all they need is leadership.
