Red Sox' Trevor Story makes massive contract decision to avoid free agency

The Boston Red Sox enjoyed a bounce-back season in 2025, which resulted in a playoff appearance. Some of the success can certainly be attributed to Trevor Story, who also had a nice bounce-back season.

On Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported that Story will not be exercising the opt-out clause in his contract and will remain with the Red Sox for the next two seasons.

Trevor Story's contract outlook

With Story opting in to the remainder of his contract, he will be owed $55 million over the next two seasons, $25 million for both 2026 and 2027, and a $5 million buyout for 2028 if he stays with the Red Sox.

Trevor Story is set to turn 33 later this month and is fresh off one of the best seasons in his career.

In 157 games this season, Story hit .263 with 25 home runs, 29 doubles, and an OPS+ of 104. His defense took a slight step back this season, but his offense certainly made up for it.

Story signed a six-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox four years ago, and the first three seasons of the deal looked like a disaster for Boston. Over the first three years of the deal, Story played just 163 games and hit just 21 home runs.

Injuries were a big part of that lack of success, but he enjoyed a healthy season in 2025, which played a big part in the steadiness of the Red Sox infield.
