Red Sox trade deadline plans are 'fluid' despite winning streak, per ESPN insider

Heading into the 2026 MLB All-Star break, the Boston Red Sox went on an impressive winning streak, as they climbed right back into the thick of the AL Wild Card race.

At the start of July, they looked like clear sellers. Now, after the All-Star break, the Red Sox might even become buyers. However, there are still a few weeks to go until the trade deadline.

As ESPN's Jeff Passan notes, the situation with the Red Sox is "fluid" as their plans at the trade deadline could change drastically.

Red Sox trade plans are 'fluid' despite winning streak

"For now, their plans are fluid," Passan writes. "Boston isn't discounting pursuing help before Aug. 3. The Red Sox also know that for an entire half of the season, they personified mediocrity, and that 15 games does not make a season."

The Red Sox might be sellers, or they might even buy at the trade deadline. Things can change drastically between now and the August 3 trade deadline.

For now, the Red Sox might be trending towards buying with their winning streak helping ascend the standings. But, a rough series or two, and the Red Sox are right back into selling mode.

While Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman don't look like trade candidates right now, a poor end of July could have Boston right back as sellers.

Even if they end up as a fringe postseason team come the deadline, they could still look to trade away a player or two to build for the future.

Jarren Duran could be dealt to improve the infield, as their outfield depth chart should be perfectly fine once Roman Anthony returns.

But, regardless of what the Red Sox do, for now, their plans are fluid. They could be buyers, or they could shift gears and sell, parting with key players for prospects to build for the future.
