In the next month, the Boston Red Sox will get an opportunity to see some of their best young players competing for spots and opportunities on the major league roster at their Spring Training complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
Baseball's top prospect, Roman Anthony, will be one of the few with a chance to steal a spot for Opening Day.
Boston's 2022 second-round pick out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida tore up the minors last season, hitting .291 with an .894 OPS, 18 home runs, 65 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 119 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester.
While some may feel the pressure of the "No. 1 prospect" title, to Anthony, it doesn't mean much.
“I don’t think any of it matters to be completely honest,” Anthony said (via. The Athletic). “I haven’t done anything in the big leagues yet. I’m just looking forward to getting there and helping the team win.”
There's a chance that Anthony starts the year back with Worcester, considering he only played 35 games there to end the 2024 season, but he feels ready for the next level.
“I’m going into spring training with that mentality, trying to win a job, and there’s really no other goal for me. I feel ready,” Anthony said. “I’m doing everything I can. I trust in the front office, and trust they’ll make the right decision.”
Anthony and Kristian Campbell will certainly be up with the club early in 2025, and if they show out in Spring Training, they could start in Boston on Opening Day.
