The Boston Red Sox stunned the entire baseball world when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison.
There had been drama since before the season about possible position changes for Devers. Alex Bregman was signed and ultimately bumped Devers to designated hitter duties.
Devers also refused to move to first base, but the relationship between the two sides was soured beyond repair, so a trade took place.
With Devers gone now, Boston could be in a good spot to possibly reignite talks with the St. Louis Cardinals about Nolan Arenado.
The Red Sox had shown interest in him and were weighing him and Bregman before ultimately choosing the latter.

The Cardinals were trying to trade Arenado so as to clear salary space and open up third base for one of their younger players in either Nolan Gorman or Thomas Saggese.
If the Red Sox trade for Arenado, St. Louis could do just that.
Devers' contract is now completely off the books for the Red Sox, as the Giants are paying down the remainder of the deal. This leaves a little financial flexibility for the Red Sox to go out and make a big move.
Arenado had interest in playing for Boston and was even willing to move to first base to increase his value.
This year, he is struggling again, hitting .243/.304/.388 with eight home runs, 36 RBI and a .692 OPS. But perhaps a change of scenery could help him.
Fenway Park is more hitter-friendly than Busch Stadium, especially for right-handed bats. Perhaps playing in Boston could help the struggling Arenado rediscover his stroke at the plate.
Because of Arenado's money, Boston might also not have to give up too much to get him if they are interested.
We'll see if they decide to give St. Louis a call.
