Red Sox' red-hot streak creates major roster dilemma with injured stars set to return

The Boston Red Sox are still on fire, after winning their eight game in a row on a walkoff in the 13th inning against the Chicago White Sox. It was yet another sweep for them, and puts them at 31-5 in their last 35.

However, many of their Opening Day roster players have been injured since the first third of the season, so they’ve also been doing this with a roster full of AAA players that are overperforming, coining them as “AAAA”. Now, their players are returning, and the Red Sox will have to make a decision that could define the rest of their season.

As previously mentioned, the Red Sox are 31-5 in their last 35, an already crazy statistic. They also have won eight in a row, and just a couple weeks ago, they tied their franchise record of 15 wins in a row. 

Boston has also gotten seven sweeps during this run, four of which were against division leaders and a Wild Card team. Overall, they’re humming with their current core, and change might not be in their best interest.

Injured players are starting to return

Though, it seems like they might not get a choice in change, as players are returning. Some are needed: Garrett Crochet, Roman Anthony, and Adley Rutschman will all be welcomed back with open arms. Crochet is Boston’s ace, Anthony its future, and Rutschman its big acquisition at the trade deadline. 

However, some injuries coming back might create some logjams for Boston. Trevor Story is one of them, as he was struggling massively this season before his surgery, and Andruw Monasterio has been performing amazingly in his absence. 

Others include Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Tanner Houck, Johan Oviedo, and Kutter Crawford, who will all be back in August and September. 

How should Boston handle it?

At this point, Boston will have to make some major decisions. They can either choose to keep rolling with what they have, or shake things up.

Considering how they’ve been doing, limiting their changes might be the best option. That includes bringing in Crochet, Anthony and Rutschman, as they have designated spots waiting for them. However, for their other infielders and pitchers, Boston may have to bench them, or make those starting pitchers into relievers and depth.
