Mariners get brutal 50% decrease in playoff odds from ESPN after trade deadline

The Seattle Mariners are coming off a very interesting MLB trade deadline, in which they shipped out Luis Castillo while adding Taylor Ward and Seranthony Dominguez.

But, this is a Mariners team that's 3.0 games back in the AL West heading into play on Friday, August 7. They're behind the Texas Rangers by 1.5 games and the Houston Astros by three. It's an uphill battle to make the playoffs this season.

ESPN's Bradford Doolittle shared that sentiment by projecting that the Mariners odds to make the postseason this year have dropped over 50%, as the odds for a postseason spot have fallen to just a 32.3% chance.

"17. Seattle Mariners. Win average: 80.7 (Last: 85.8, eighth). In the playoffs: 32.3% (Last: 83.2%). Champions: 1.3% (Last: 6.5%)," Doolittle shared.

These updated odds for the Mariners paint quite a bleak picture. Instead of having over an 80% chance to make the playoffs, they've dropped 50.9% in the last month of play.

While their additions of Ward and Domiguez could help them make a postseason run, alongside their already strong roster, the players are not living up to the hype and falling well short of expectations.

Their recent struggles have led to the team's playoff odds dropping over 50% in the last month, and under 35% after a rough July, where they went 9-15.

They have a 3-2 record in August so far, but they really need to pick up the pace; otherwise, they're going to miss the postseason in a wide-open American League.

If they just make it to the postseason, with how this AL field is playing, anything can happen.

The only issue is they aren't playing like a playoff team, which could ruin a great opportunity to make a deep postseason run after coming one game away from a World Series appearance last year.
