After a quick postseason exit last season, the Boston Red Sox have made it their mission to be aggressive this offseason. They have made multiple moves that should put them in a better place for the 2026 season.
They made two significant trades with the St. Louis Cardinals, acquiring Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. They also acquired Johan Oviedo in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
But their biggest splash is when they signed Ranger Suarez on a five-year, $130 million deal.
However, they still have some needs before the new season rolls along. They could use some infield power, preferably at second base.
Red Sox-Nationals trade pitch sends All-Star infielder to Boston
With just a few days left until February, there are not many players left on the open market. Many teams have started kicking the tires on some trade ideas after missing out on some free agents.
Still needing help in the middle infield, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller suggests Boston could trade LHP Connelly Early and RHP Kyon Witherspoon to the Washington Nationals in exchange for CJ Abrams.
"While Boston has about a dozen options for its starting rotation at this point, its middle infield situation remains highly suspect. Witherspoon was their first-round pick this past summer, several years away from making any sort of impact in the majors. But Early could be the ace of Washington's staff in 2026."
Washington would lose a quality infielder in exchange for a potential ace right now and a potential ace of the future, as Witherspoon was recently Boston's top draft pick last summer.
This trade would benefit both sides, but it would ultimately be up to Washington to decide. They could have other suitors as well, as Miller also mentions the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners as being trade options.
