The Boston Red Sox have been caught in the middle of a very messy situation. Their relationship with three-time All-Star and former World Series champion Rafael Devers had reached a boiling point.
Unfortunately, things ended on a sour note for both sides. Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants late on Father's Day, setting the stage for what could be a wild trade deadline.
Boston received pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison in exchange.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the relationship between Devers and the Red Sox had soured to the point of Cora even supporting a trade.
"For months, the tension between Devers and the team had simmered. What started in spring training as a repairable mismanagement of Devers' future -- and his ego -- by the Red Sox degraded into something far too familiar for the organization. Devers, according to a person familiar with his thinking, felt 'lied to and betrayed' by the Red Sox. Cora, long one of Devers' chief supporters and advocates, supported his expulsion," Passan wrote.

It's clear that the relationship had been damaged beyond repair. Both sides were understandably upset with one another over poor communication.
But the fact that Cora reportedly supported a trade of Devers shows just how bad things had gotten. While Boston currently holds the third American League Wild Card spot and had a six-game winning streak, they still need to make a move to make up for the loss of Devers.
Devers is somebody that is going to be incredibly hard for Boston to replace, given the power in his bat. But Boston also needs help at first base with Triston Casas out for the rest of 2025.
Boston could circle back to Nolan Arenado, who they had interest in last offseason before signing Alex Bregman. But Devers won't be easy to replace.
Without him though, Boston needs to hit the trade market in search of a bat if they hope to be buyers at the deadline.
We'll see what they decide to do.
