The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a shocking move earlier this week. Tonight, Devers will face his former team for the first time.
The Boston Red Sox ended up trading Devers after a long saga that started when the team signed Alex Bregman. Bregman has been great for the Red Sox, but the move forced Devers to be a full-time designated hitter. He initially pushed back on the idea, but eventually became the DH.
Devers did not start off well as the DH, going 0-for-19 to start the year. Eventually, he settled in and was playing like the three-time All-Star he was. However, Triston Casas' injury once again started drama in regards to Devers' position. Craig Breslow reportedly approached Devers about playing first base. He was upset by the request, went on a rant to the media and even called out Breslow, saying he does not understand the moves he makes.
That moment was likely the tipping point for the front office. The team needed their franchise player to step up, but he refused. To make matters worse, when Devers got to San Francisco, he noted in his introductory press conference that he is willing to play any position. According to MLB.com's Ian Browne, Devers revealed he would have played first base for the Red Sox on one condition.
"Rafael Devers mostly didn't want to talk about the past today but he did offer this," wrote Browne on X. "He said if the Red Sox had asked him to play first at the beginning of Spring Training, he would have."

In reality, the Red Sox would never have asked him to play first base before the season, as they had Triston Casas. However, Devers has started taking ground balls at first base for his new team, even though they are asking him in the middle of the season.
