The Boston Red Sox received disappointing news regarding the return of one of their starting pitchers.
The Red Sox's starting rotation has dealt with its fair share of injuries this season, with most of their key rotational pieces missing significant time. MassLive.com's Sean McAdam reported that the Red Sox will be without starter Kutter Crawford for the rest of the season as he undergoes season-ending wrist surgery.
"Kutter Crawford’s season is very likely over before it began," McAdam wrote. "Crawford, who led the Red Sox in both starts and innings pitched in 2024, had been sidelined with patellar tendinitis and rehabbing at the team’s spring training complex in Fort Myers. His knee was improving, but he also suffered an off-field wrist injury that will now require surgery. The surgical procedure will 'most likely' mean an end to his season, Alex Cora said."
"Cora emphasized that the nature of the injury was the result of an accident and not anything 'irresponsible' on the part of Crawford. Crawford’s surgery indeed weakens the team depth, which, early in the season was sufficient enough for the Red Sox to trade Quinn Priester to Milwaukee."
The Red Sox have been patiently awaiting the return of Crawford all season, but will now have to continue filling the void left behind with him injured. Crawford, 29, has spent all four seasons of his career in Boston and has made at least 20 appearances in each of the past three seasons.

Last season, Crawford started in 33 games, throwing 183.2 innings with a 4.36 ERA and 175 strikeouts. That is a lot of innings that the Red Sox will need to find others to fill. Crawford is on a one-year, $2.75 million deal, according to Spotrac, but is under team control through the 2028 season, so this likely won't be the end of his time in Boston.
