Mavericks Free Agency Rumors: Nico Harrison eyeing 2 former Lakers PGs for possible reunion with Anthony Davis

Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison wants to shore up the team's backcourt. He is reportedly considering tapping in free agency a point guard, among them a couple who played with resident star Anthony Davis during his time with the LA Lakers.

The Mavericks (39-43) missed out on a playoff spot last campaign after making the NBA Finals the previous season. It also came on the heels of their earth-shaking trade move in February to send superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers for a package that included Davis.

Among the things that Dallas is reportedly looking to address this offseason is a point guard to help hold the fort as the team awaits Kyrie Irving's return from a knee injury.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday, Harrison is reportedly keen on using their $5.7-million Mid-Level Exception to target Chris Paul, Dennis Schroder, D'Angelo Russell or Malcolm Brogdon in free agency to address their point guard needs.

Davis played with Schroder and Russell on the Lakers. Schroder, who split time with the Golden State Warriors and Detroit Pistons last season, had two tours of duty (2021 and 2023) with the Lakers. Russell also had two stints (2015 and 2023) with the Lakers until he was traded midway through last season to the Brooklyn Nets.

Paul played last season with the San Antonio Spurs, while Brogdon saw action for the Portland Trail Blazers.

In their search for a point guard, Harrison is reportedly on the lookout for a replacement for Irving, but can transition into a reserve role upon his return. Irving is expected to be out until January 2026 as he recovers from an ACL injury.

While they weigh their options on a possible point guard addition, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to draft No. 1 Cooper Flagg in this year's NBA draft. They are excited about the possibilities that the former Duke star will bring to the team.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd spoke about it in the lead-up to the draft, which is set to go down on Wednesday at the Barclays Center in New York.

He said of Flagg:

"I see a young man who is only 18 years old who can do a lot of things. He won't be 19 until December, which is really surprising, but I think when you talk about being able to play 2 through 4, and in today's game, you might be able to sneak him around the five, if we're going to label him as a position player. "Maybe there's still some growth, only being 18, he could still grow. But I think you can play him at the two, his ability to shoot the ball, to be able to put on the floor. Again, as I talked about, we can have a big group out there that could start."

The Mavericks won the right to pick first in the draft despite only having a 1.8% chance in the lottery.
