Red Sox $140 million All-Star breaks silence on shocking Rafael Devers trade

The Boston Red Sox sent a shock in the baseball world when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. One of their highest-paid players spoke on the trade.

Devers was traded shortly after the Red Sox completed a sweep of the New York Yankees. They are playing some of their best baseball of the season and are back above .500. They are also a half-game back of an American League Wild Card spot now. However, they will now have to continue their strong play without one of the best players in baseball.

Devers' trade came as a shock in the Red Sox clubhouse as well. Tension between Devers and the organization had been brewing after Devers had publicly called out the team for asking him to change positions after Triston Casas' injury. He was already against the idea of being a designated hitter after the team signed Alex Bregman. Trevor Story spoke on the timing of the trade and the team's mindset.

"The timing of it comes at a weird time. We thought we were playing really good," Story told reporters. "I think it's a brutal reminder that this game is a business. It showed its face. There are a lot of things that are out of our control. A weird time, for sure. But we have a game to play tonight and we're coming to win it."

Story signed a six-year, $140 million deal with the Red Sox before the 2022 season. He has not lived up to his contract, not playing more than 94 games in a season since his arrival. However, this season he has actually been healthy, but is not playing like the player who was named an All-Star twice with the Colorado Rockies.

Story is slashing .234/.277/.361 and is likely wondering what his future with the team looks like with young infielders coming up. However, he is focused on trying to help the team make the postseason. Story is actually playing much better since June started. He is slashing .314/.352/.510 with two home runs and a few great defensive plays.

Losing Devers is a big blow, but the Red Sox seem determined to keep playing well and make a push to play in October. Getting Story playing like he did with the Rockies would be a huge step in that direction.
