Ravens bring back Diontae Johnson for potential future payoff

Add another wrinkle into Diontae Johnson's insane 2024 season, as the Baltimore Ravens claimed him from waivers on Wednesday. Johnson was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Carolina Panthers last offseason, then shipped to Baltimore ahead of the trade deadline. After one measly catch in four games with the Ravens, they waived him.

He would latch on with the Houston Texans, catching one pass for 12 yards in their Wild Card win against the Los Angeles Chargers. However, it was reported that Johnson caused a scene despite the win due to his lack of a role. The Texans waived him as well, but is now back with the Ravens after being claimed by the team who let him go just a few weeks ago.

Reunion: Receiver Diontae Johnson’s wild season continues, as he’s been claimed by… the #Ravens(!), per me and @MikeGarafolo.

While he’s back with Baltimore, per NFL rules, he won’t be awarded until after the Super Bowl. Then he’ll be free. pic.twitter.com/GfnUgHj1cu

This is an interesting scenario, as Mike Garafolo reports. "Two things here: The #Ravens will be in line for a compensatory draft pick if Diontae Johnson gets a deal that factors into the formula. And this also takes an experienced receiver off the market should another team need one in a pinch this offseason."

The Ravens are basically playing chess with this move.
