The Toronto Raptors knew that Kawhi Leonard was likely a one-year rental in 2018-19.
The Raptors traded for the seven-time All-Star during the 2018 offseason and enjoyed instant success. Leonard led the franchise to the first-ever championship while earning his second NBA Finals MVP nod in the process. However, Leonard opted to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers rather than run it back with Toronto.
Could the Raptors reunite with the two-time NBA champion this offseason in a surprising move? According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel’s encouraging trade report, it appears feasible.
“It was then that the Toronto Raptors traded for Leonard without knowing what the future held for him in free agency,” Siegel stated on Feb. 11. “That move led Toronto to their first NBA championship.”
“Something similar could happen with Leonard this upcoming offseason. Maybe, just maybe, a return to the Raptors to compete for another championship is a scenario we could see play out.”
Leonard’s recent comments regarding the Clippers should be music to the Raptors’ ears. The future Hall of Fame forward doesn’t believe the Clippers are contenders this season, which should give the Raptors hope that a blockbuster deal could eventually materialize.
Toronto is a Top 5 Eastern Conference squad and is undoubtedly better positioned for future success. Bringing Leonard back into the fold would be the icing on the cake, and Siegel’s report holds merit; it isn’t a far-fetched offseason idea.
