Rams trade and $124M extension for Chiefs' All-Pro CB called top-10 best offseason move

The Los Angeles Rams got some very welcome news before the 2025 NFL season was officially over, as Matthew Stafford revealed he was coming back for one more season.

Going all-in was a must for the Rams, and they've shown a willingness to do so with their moves this offseason. The most notable of which was a blockbuster trade for a Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro cornerback.

That move, the trade and subsequent $124 million extension for Trent McDuffie, was called one of the top-10 best moves of the offseason by NFL.com's Jeffri Chadiha.

Rams' Trent McDuffie trade and signing top-10 offseason move

"The Rams believe they missed out on a second Super Bowl under head coach Sean McVay because their defensive backfield didn't hold up when it mattered most," Chadiha writes. "Adding McDuffie goes a long way toward preventing that disastrous situation from repeating itself."

During the 2025 NFL postseason, against the Seattle Seahawks and Sam Darnold, the Rams' cornerbacks struggled in a bad way, allowing the Seattle offense to have a big day that was just enough to beat the Rams.

With how overmatched the New England Patriots looked in the Super Bowl, the struggles from the cornerback room last year feel like the difference between an NFC Championship loss and a Super Bowl win.

Instead of risking such a future repeating itself in 2026, the Rams made the big decision to spend a first, third, fifth, and sixth-round pick on McDuffie, landing the All-Pro cornerback from the Chiefs.

It was one of the first moves of the offseason, and it's one of the best as well. The Rams have a new top cornerback, significantly improving a position that needed major help last season.

This trade for McDuffie, regardless of the $124 million extension, was deemed a top-10 move of the offseason. It makes sense, as this is a perfect move for a team like the Rams trying to go all-in for the 2026 NFL season.
