When a player retires from the NFL while still under contract, that contract doesn't just disappear.
If the player decides to mount a comeback -- say, like Aaron Donald may do with the Los Angeles Rams -- the contract comes back into effect.
And in this case, Donald's reactivated contract would pay him $30 million for the season ahead.
ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed this out in a new podcast episode, and he makes the case that this won't be as simple as everyone wants it to be:
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 28, 2026MORE: Could Jake Paul really play in the NFL?
Schefter is basically foreshadowing some potential drama.
If Donald wants to play again, it's likely that the Rams have to find a way to renegotiate his contract.
And how do you figure out what to pay an all-time great who retired after the 2023 season and hasn't played in the past two NFL campaigns?
It could be a fascinating negotiating situation between the Rams and Donald, if it comes to that.
Schefter is certainly right to point this out, though. Paying Donald $30 million for the season ahead is simply something that would be hard for the Rams to pull off.
