Rafael Devers controversy gets surprising reaction from Red Sox legend

Rafael Devers has brought out opinions from everyone.

The Boston Red Sox star went from an offseason third base to DH move, to a trade desire, to a pull back of that request, to a nightmare start to the season, to his usual slugging ways, and now into the latest controversy.

The Red Sox need a first baseman after Triston Casas' season-ending injury, and Devers doesn't want to do it.

He's gotten criticism from a lot of directions, but one Red Sox legend is actually supporting Devers.

That's Pedro Martinez, who took to social media earlier this week to express his feelings.

"You have to be Devers to understand Devers," Martinez wrote. "If you don’t treat the player, treat the money you’re paying him...Devers does not shy away from working...Devers is not a guy that talks much, he leads by example. When you enter an organization you sign a confidentiality agreement and that needs to be respected on both sides, the front office and the player."

Much of what Martinez said feels like the key here.

If Devers' teammates see a strong work ethic out of him, his annoyance at all the positional maneuvering is probably less bothersome.

If he was viewed as slacking off, that'd be a different story.

At least how Martinez tells it, Devers does the right things to get himself ready to contribute in a big way for the Red Sox.

Whether at DH, first base or third base, the Red Sox need Devers at his best.
