Quinn Ewers trade details: Jaguars boost QB room behind Trevor Lawrence in pre-cut deadline deal with Dolphins

With the NFL's roster-cuts deadline arriving Sunday, this weekend will be full of player movement — including the potential for quarterbacks finding new homes.

While names like Anthony Richardson, J.J. McCarthy and Will Howard will be worth monitoring, the first notable exchange of passers arrived Saturday when the Jaguars landed another former college star, Quinn Ewers, from the Dolphins.

Ewers is now set to back up Trevor Lawrence in 2026, joining Liam Coen's offense.

Here's a look at Saturday's Ewers deal between Jacksonville and Miami and how the quarterback fits with the Jaguars.

In the trade, the Dolphins are receiving a 2028 sixth-round selection in exchange for Ewers, according to Adam Schefter. 

Ewers was drafted in 2025 as a seventh-round pick coming out of Texas, fresh off a trip to the College Football Playoff but opting to take his talents to the NFL. He immediately became a young backup to Tua Tagovailoa — but when the Dolphins moved on from Tagovailoa this offseason, they found a new starter, rather than promoting Ewers to QB1.

The arrival of Malik Willis in Miami has meant a brand-new, run-heavy offense is being implemented, something Ewers doesn't complement well, if needed. With the Dolphins' regime change, Ewers became an expendable quarterback piece.

Now, the Jaguars land him in a cleaner offensive fit, giving them a young player to develop behind Lawrence.

Jaguars QB depth chart

Ewers projects to become Lawrence's top backup, as he appeared in four games for the Dolphins last season, owning some on-field experience. Nick Mullens, a veteran journeyman who was on the Jaguars' bench last season, may also factor in as QB2 — it will be up to Coen whether he goes with the younger option, if needed.

Undrafted rookie Carter Bradley is also still on Jacksonville's roster, but it's likely that the team sticks with Lawrence, Ewers and Mullens in its quarterback room to open the season.

Ewers is 23 years old. He'll turn 24 after the 2026 NFL season, on March 15, 2027.
