The Pittsburgh Steelers are now in desperate need of a wide receiver, as the team traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys and lacks starting-caliber players at the position outside of DK Metcalf.
With the draft over and the trade market dry, Pittsburgh will likely have to search free agency for a playmaker to pair with Metcalf. There aren't many options left, but Steelers Wire's Curt Popejoy believes general manager Omar Khan should sign Chicago Bears free agent wide receiver Keenan Allen.
"Even after trading for DK Metcalf and signing Robert Woods, this wide receiver group could use more help after the Pickens trade. Allen is a solid veteran receiver who is a little older and might cost a bit more," Popejoy wrote.
Allen has been one of the most consistent receivers in football since entering the league in 2013. Though he had a down year for his standards in 2024, hauling in 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games with the Bears, the six-time Pro Bowler is still a capable player who would be a major addition to the Steelers' offense.
Pittsburgh doesn't know who their starting quarterback will be yet, but nevertheless, signing Allen to be the No.2 receiver and savvy security blanket in the offense would be a masterful move. He won't be cheap to sign, as Spotrac projects the 33-year-old will land a two-year deal worth around $22.2 million on the open market, which is an average annual salary of $11.1 million.
Allen didn't have the most productive campaign last year, but the former Los Angeles Charger is still reliable and would work well with Metcalf. Pittsburgh should look to sign the California product and add him to an offense that desperately needs another pass-catcher.
