The San Diego Padres need a pitcher to replace Dylan Cease after he departed in free agency, and logically, they would go after the top free agent left on the market, which is Framber Valdez. However, with his clubhouse antics and projected contract, they might want to go with a safer option.
Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes that the Padres should do the latter, and proposes they make a trade with the New York Mets for All-Star ace Kodai Senga.
The trade would look like this:
Padres get: RHP Kodai Senga
Mets get: LHP J.P. Sears, RHP Bradgley Rodriguez (SD #6), 1B Kale Fountain (SD #8)
“The San Diego Padres need rotation help more than most other contenders at this point in the offseason. Unfortunately, AJ Preller's hands are tied due to ownership's ongoing financial disputes, which could render him unable to bid at the necessary level for a top free agent like Framber Valdez. A trade could prove more viable, with New York Mets righty Kodai Senga of particular appeal. He's under club control for two more years, with a club option in 2028. In terms of pure stuff, Senga feels a lot more valuable than the trade package laid out above…When he's on, Senga looks like a legitimate frontline ace. He can give San Diego a real weapon come October,” Kline wrote.
This past season, Senga posted a 7-6 record, a 3.02 ERA, 109 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.315 over 113 innings pitched. His injury history is a little concerning, but when he’s healthy, he’s a bonafide ace.
Plus, he’d be much cheaper than Valdez. Currently, he's on a five-year, $75 million deal, which is much more doable than Valdez’s projected nine figure deal.
Hopefully, the Padres consider this trade, and get to work before the 2026 season begins.
