President Trump and wife Melania share tender moment at Pope Francis’ funeral

President Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, were spotted engaging in a friendly conversation during Pope Francis’ funeral at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, Italy, on Saturday.

Video from the religious ceremony showed the US president, 78, leaning in to whisper a few words to the first lady, 55, which prompted the normally stoic Melania to flash a smile.

The married couple continued briefly chatting for a few minutes back-and-forth before what appeared to be a member of their security staff approached them to offer a pair of sunglasses or bottles of water.

Trump was dressed for the occasion in a navy blue suit, matching dark blue tie and white dress shirt. Melania, meanwhile, wore a modest black blazer dress, lace gloves and a black lace mantilla-style veil.

They, along with former President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, were among the many dignitaries invited to pay their respects to the late Pope Francis, who died at age 88 Monday as a result of a stroke.

Prince William also attended the service on behalf of his father, King Charles III, as it is Buckingham Palace’s protocol and precedence for their reigning monarch to not attend funerals.

The Prince of Wales’ spouse, Kate Middleton, was noticeably absent. However, she did not attend because it is not customary for a British royal’s partner to be required to attend funerals.

The princess, 43, also just finished her cancer treatment about seven months ago, and has been cautious about which public appearances she makes amid her ongoing health journey.

Like Middleton, Melania has made it known she will not be by her husband’s side at every engagement.

Insiders told Page Six last June — prior to Trump winning the presidential election, “Melania has made a deal with her husband that if he wins the presidency she will not have to be on first lady duty 24/7.”

The former model then gave further insight into why she is judicious about how she spends her time.

“I will be in the White House, and when I need to be in New York, I will be in New York. When I need to be in Palm Beach, I will be in Palm Beach,” she explained on “Fox & Friends” in January.

“But my first priority is, you know, to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife, and once we are in on Jan. 20, you serve the country.”

Melania and Trump have been married since 2005. They share an 18-year-old son, Barron.
