Premier League transfer record: Where Morgan Rogers to Chelsea ranks among biggest ever deals

Chelsea have made a statement of intent ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season by agreeing a mega-money deal for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers.

England international Rogers is poised to move to Stamford Bridge for £117 million ($156.5 million), following a summer of speculation where champions Arsenal were presumed to be the frontrunners for the 23-year-old's services.

It will make Rogers the most expensive player in Chelsea history, ahead of some stellar names, which is surprising given the London club's history of extravagant spending that dates back to the Roman Abramovich era.

But where does the Rogers move rank in overall Premier League history as England's top flight continues to lead the way globally in terms of huge transfer outlay in the modern era?

Biggest transfers in Premier League history

Rogers will become the second most expensive player in British history when he joins Chelsea. The £117m fee comes in behind the £130m ($170m) deal that took Alexander Isak from Newcastle United to Liverpool in 2025.

Villa signing off on Rogers' departure means he becomes the most expensive English player of all time. His 2026 World Cup teammate Elliot Anderson briefly held this distinction after Nottingham Forest reached an agreement to sell the midfielder to Manchester City earlier this summer.

It means the top three transfers in British history have all taken place between Premier League clubs.

Anderson's £116m ($153m) move matched the overall value of Florian Wirtz's switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool in June 2025, a British record fee that was dwarfed by the arrival of Isak at Anfield in the same transfer window.

All of the top 10 biggest Premier League transfers have occurred within the past five years, with Romelu Lukaku's August 2021 move to Chelsea the oldest entry on the list.

Lukaku, Rogers, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez mean Chelsea have the most purchases in the top 10 with four, while City and Liverpool are responsible for two each.

Jack Grealish became the first player in British football to cost £100m in August 2022, but seven players have since moved in deals worth more money.

Grealish and Rogers mean Aston Villa have the joint-most sales on the list alongside Newcastle United, who followed the protracted Isak saga with a more straightforward and surprisingly lucrative agreement to take Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

Alongside Tonali and Anderson. Rogers' move is the third entry into the top 10 from July 2026.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe's gargantuan moves to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 still lead the way in terms of the overall global transfer record. They are unlikely to be overhauled any time soon. 

Aside from that, though, the Premier League dominates the top 10 all-time list, with six of the purchases listed.
