PREMA Racing made its IndyCar debut in 2025 as the Italy-based team fielded a couple of cars driven by Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott. However, soon after the season ended, reports of PREMA’s financial struggle created doubts over their IndyCar future. Doug Boles recently came out and claimed that the Italian team's future will be clear in a few weeks.

PREMA Racing has a great heritage in the world of motorsports and was founded in 1983. The team initially raced in the Italian F3 championship and expanded over the years. At the current moment, the Italian team races in the FIA and regional Formula series.

PREMA has given the stage to multiple top-tier drivers over the years, including the likes of Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, Dennis Hauger, and more. PREMA has the motorsport experience going into the IndyCar series and did exceptionally well in their debut season.

Soon after the 2025 season ended, reports of uncertainty around PREMA’s IndyCar future started circling the paddock. It was reported that the Italian team’s parent company had some financial trouble.

IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles recently featured on Marshall Pruett’s podcast and was questioned about PREMA Racing's future in the sport. Boles claimed that the team is figuring things out as he said,

“We had some really good conversations with their leadership and ownership towards the end of the summer as they were trying to figure out what 2026 looks like and they continue to work on that. We talked to Piers (Phillips) quite a bit to check in with him to see where they're going.I know they are actively working on it. Uh they have not given up. I think uh they feel hopeful and certainly to your point, they had a pretty successful debut year.” (3:50 onwards)

Doug Boles went on to detail how PREMA took pride in Robert Shwartzman’s Indy 500 pole position. Boles revealed that the team will lift the shade of uncertainty in the next few weeks.

“We're hopeful that uh that they'll be back and uh you know, I think we'll know here in the next few weeks as things start to unfold,” said Doug Boles

PREMA Racing boss considers 2025 IndyCar season a successful debut year

Amid the speculation around the IndyCar future, PREMA Racing boss Rene Rosin came out in November and confirmed that the Italian team was considering its options but trying its best to continue in the series after a successful 2025 season.

“Honestly, we are looking at and evaluating different solutions. The programme has been, I would say, a great success over the year. We started from scratch, we took pole in the Indy 500 and we were consistently in the [top 10] for the last few events,” (said Rosin via Motorsport)

If PREMA continues for the 2026 season, they will lineup with Robert Shwartzman and Callum Ilott, who they signed on a multi-year contract ahead of the 2025 season.
