Pistons give Jalen Duren $195M contract offer as ugly stalemate continues with camp looming

The Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren have been going back and forth all summer about a contract, but here they are with nothing resolved. The two sides are running out of time to get something done with training camp coming up.

Duren has yet to accept the qualifying offer that would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. It is believed that if he takes that offer, it would be because the relationship between the two sides has been ruined.

“If he takes that (qualifying offer)...he really wants out, he is fed up...he doesn't want to be there. Even if that's the case I would say do not do that," NBA reporter Chris Haynes said.

Detroit has been staying consistent with its offer, but the team is not willing to get anywhere near a supermax. The last contract offer was worth $190 million.

“Per league sources, Detroit's last offer was a five-year deal in the $190 million range. Duren, who is eligible to receive a five-year, $287 million contract, is seeking at least $200 million," The Athletic's Sam Amick wrote.

However, the Pistons just upped their offer again. This time, it is an offer worth $195 million.

“The Pistons didn’t want a deal to be over $35 million. That was the initial talk for the Pistons, not Jalen Duren, where they wanted to get him on a contract around $35 million. Jalen Duren and his camp viewed him as a max-level player, that wasn’t gonna be on the table at all, so they’ve been kind of headstrong on saying that they want over $40 million a year on a new deal. That’s where the discrepancy has lied. Our good friend over at The Athletic, Sam Amick, says that a five-year $195 million deal is on the table from the Pistons, around $37-$38 million annually. That hasn’t been accepted right now and if you’re Jalen Duren and his camp, I mean, what else do you really want at this point,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel said.

There is no reason that Duren and his camp should decline this offer, as it is likely the highest the organization is willing to go. However, if he declines this one, the Pistons could go up again or be done with negotiations.

Duren is a very talented center, but his playoff struggles are what is keeping him from getting the money he wants. It has been an ugly stalemate all summer, and it should finally come to an end after this significant contract offer.
