Pirates predicted to finish off explosive offseason by signing $8.9 million three-time Cy Young, two-time World Series champ to fill out Paul Skenes-led rotation

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been one of the more surprising teams this offseason, as they made multiple moves to make their team go from mediocre to a possible contender. However, they are honestly one move away from being a true contender.

Fansided’s Christopher Kline believes he has the move to put them over the edge, and predicts the Pirates will sign future Hall-of-Famer Max Scherzer. Scherzer is looking for a team where he can sing his swan song, and Pittsburgh might be the perfect location.

“Max Scherzer enters his age-42 season with hopes of one last run, so why on earth would he pick the Pittsburgh Pirates? It's a fair question, but Scherzer also wants money, and the Pirates have a bit more spending power than we're accustomed to. Moreover, it's not unrealistic to think Pittsburgh is ready for a run — sort of…This rotation threatens to really take off once Jared Jones returns from his elbow surgery. Paul Skenes is a perennial Cy Young candidate already, and Scherzer might appreciate the chance to impart some wisdom on the next generation before he exits stage left. The Pirates don't have a clear No. 5 starter after the Mike Burrows trade and could use the extra bullets Scherzer provides, even if he's not the most dependable option at this point in his career,” Kline wrote.

This past season, Scherzer posted a 5-5 record, a 5.19 ERA,  82 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.294 over 85 innings pitched. He was facing injuries though, and when it counted in the postseason, he showed Mad Max is still in there.

Scherzer is only projected to get a one-year deal, with a projected cost of around $8.9 million. For the Pirates, that could be a great deal to have a former three-time Cy Young finish off your rotation with your current Cy Young leading it off.

Hopefully, the Pirates pursue this, and get Scherzer on their team as soon as they can.
