Jimmy Johnson is not buying the argument that Bill Belichick isn’t a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Miami's legendary coach came to Belichick’s defense after the eight-time Super Bowl winner fell short of the required votes for induction during his first year of eligibility. It was a result that stunned much of the NFL world.
Johnson, who won two Super Bowls as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, voiced his frustration repeatedly on social media, calling the decision “wrong” and questioning the credibility of the voters who passed on Belichick.
“This is just WRONG,” Johnson wrote, citing Belichick’s championships, division titles and longevity. Johnson went further by criticizing the Hall’s secret ballot process and challenging voters to publicly stand by their decisions.

Johnson also dismissed the idea that past controversies, including Spygate, should factor into Belichick’s candidacy. He noted that Belichick thrived in multiple eras of the league, including after the introduction of the salary cap and unrestricted free agency.

Belichick owns 333 career wins, including the playoffs, second only to Don Shula. He won six Super Bowls as head coach in New England and two more as a defensive coordinator with the New York Giants, accomplishments Johnson believes should have made his induction automatic.
