Konnor Griffin is already turning into a household name in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates' shortstop phenom hasn't even played an MLB game.
That hasn't stopped the Pirates from pursuing a contract extension with the 19-year old who was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Griffin is taking Spring Training by storm. With each passing day, he increases his chances of making the Opening Day roster.
And even if he's not there for game one, Griffin will arrive soon enough, and he'll have a chance to develop into one of the best players in the game.
Because of all the potential, which made him the No. 1 prospect in the entire sport by every major outlet, Griffin is someone the Pirates want to sign early to a contract extension.
Pirates reporter Jason Mackey recently suggested that if it happens, it'll be for more than $100 million.
Pittsburgh has never done a deal like that with a player before an at bat in the big leagues, but Griffin isn't like any player they've had in recent memory.

Any extension the Pirates sign with Griffin would have the goal of buying out at least a couple of his free agent years.
When a player like Griffin reaches the majors, he has three years of pre-arbitration salaries, then three more years of salary negotiated via arbitration, for a total of six years of club control.
So if the Pirates can get Griffin to sign an eight or nine year contract, it takes the six years of club control to a longer amount. And for Griffin, it would ensure security while also potentially getting him a slight raise in these early years when he'd otherwise be making quite the low salary.
It's not clear whether Griffin wants to do something like that or if he'd prefer to ensure he reaches free agency at the earliest opportunity.
What is becoming more and more clear is that Griffin could really become a superstar sooner rather than later.
