Phillies trade idea for Red Sox All-Star makes 'too much sense'

The Philadelphia Phillies are in need of more production from their outfield. Brandon Marsh, Johan Rojas and Max Kepler have seen plenty of playing time, but are not producing at the plate.

Outside of Nick Castellanos, the outfield for the Phillies has been underwhelming offensively. If the Phillies want to make a deep run in the postseason, they may need to swing a trade. The Boston Red Sox could be sellers at the deadline, and FanSided's Zachary Rotman suggested that Jarren Duran makes "too much sense" for the Phillies.

"The Philadelphia Phillies need an outfielder, and might be desperate enough to overpay for one," wrote Rotman. "Their left fielders rank 20th in the majors with a 94 WRC+, and their center fielders rank 25th in the majors with a 72 WRC+. Duran would be a major upgrade, and can be a permanent fixture at the top of their order in front of Trea Turner, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

"Where this is ideal for the Red Sox is that the Phillies are a National League club that the Red Sox only play three times in the regular season, and they have a ton to offer. From Andrew Painter, to Mick Abel, to Aidan Miller, the options are plentiful for the Red Sox."

The Phillies likely would not be willing to part with Painter or Abel for Duran. However, Duran would be more than just a rental. He is under club control through 2028, but that is partially why the Red Sox may be looking to trade him.

The Red Sox's top prospect, Roman Anthony, is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. He is ready to make his debut, but there is no room in the outfield, and there doesn't seem to be a spot opening up soon. Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu have been the team's primary outfield trio.

Rafaela is signed to a long-term extension, and Abreu is under club control through 2029. Duran is the oldest of the three and has the least club control. He is slashing .274/.323/.423 and leads baseball in triples. He has great trade value and was an All-Star last year. The Red Sox need to create room for Anthony, and trading Duran would do that while also adding valuable prospects.
