Phillies' right field problem gets worse with Adolis Garcia's injury

The Philadelphia Phillies' right field problem just got a lot worse now that Adolis Garcia is injured (pulled right shoulder muscle).

Garcia exited the Phillies 7-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh inning after attempting to throw out Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer. The throw to the plate was not in time to get Springer. The play had Garcia call out Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly and the training staff, and remove him from the game.

The two-time All-Star went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before getting removed, and saw his season batting average drop to .195.

Don Mattingly said other Philadelphia Phillies will need to step up with Adolis Garcia out

Mattingly was asked for his thoughts on losing Garcia after the game, to which he replied that "somebody" else would need to pick things up.

“I'd say a little bit, obviously,” Mattingly said postgame. “Anytime a guy, they kind of know when they've done something. So, we'll see what happens. He'll probably get some imaging tomorrow, find out where you know the true severity of it. Hope for the best, and see what happens.”

Mattingly added on losing a high-quality defender like Garcia: “Well, obviously, you lose a defender like that, it changes things a little bit, but you know everybody deals with, you know, stuff all the time, so we'll have to, you know, somebody's got to pick it up.”

The Phillies' options for right field are few and far between. If Garcia is to wind up on the injured list, the Phillies are likely to call up either Otto Kemp or Felix Reyes. Reyes may be the likely option, given that he has played right field.

Neither Kemp nor Reyes has been performing well in Leigh Valley this month, with Kemp hitting .100 with a .400 OPS in 30 at-bats and Reyes hitting .161 with a .567 OPS in 31 at-bats. Steward Berroa could also see more time in center field to see what he could add to the lineup.

Either way, Garcia's injury will further prompt the Phillies to add a right-handed bat by or even before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
